IV. Editorial from Steve Ward, CEO
Computer speed. I have about 10-15 models that I am watching at any time, and some of them can really hog the CPU. That’s because I use the Adaptive TurboProp 2 (ATP2) and Adaptive Net Indicators (ANI) add-ons quite a bit lately, and I let the former retrain with each new 5 minute bar. Sometimes there are several in each chart, one even with nested nets (which I usually recommend against, but on occasion it just works out better if you know what you are doing). On my old dual core computer, it was taking almost 2 minutes to recalculate each new bar if I had been watching 3 or 4 at once. You can’t trade like that on 5 minute bars.
We posted a tip a week ago about using Interchart Tools to speed up such things, which helped, and I changed some charts to 6 minutes, and others to 7 minutes so they would not always recalculate at the same time. However there is only so much you can do before it is time to get a new computer.
I also often feed those ATP2 results into ChaosHunter quite a bit now, and even with processing distributed between two cores and a couple of other machines, ChaosHunter can take a while to get something really good.
Anyway, at the last Seminar one of the attendees had just purchased a new computer with the Intel I7 chip and was very pleased with its performance, even as he over-clocked it. Another attendee followed suit in the new few weeks, also reporting great performance. So I got one too this week – the I7 “Extreme” with water cooling, but I haven’t tried over-clocking. I think we all purchased from CyberPower, Inc., out of Baldwin Park California.
One of my first tests was with ChaosHunter. On this quad core I7 Extreme, ChaosHunter finds and distributes almost equally among 8 cores, because each of the 4 is hyperthreaded and looks like two cores to ChaosHunter. One test I ran shows one core on the 3.2 GHz I7 number crunches almost three times as fast as a single core in my old 2.8 GHz Pentium D. So now I am running ChaosHunter really fast, and running four copies of NeuroShell on the I7, each with about 3 charts, and only taking seconds to recalculate. I can’t wait for release 6.0 with its distributed multi-core optimization.
Since people are always asking us “What computer should I buy next?” I encourage all of you with new computer tests under your belt to post about them on our user forum on www.ward.net.

V. Summer Hours
Summer is starting here on the US east coast and in the summer thunderstorms frequently come rolling over in the afternoon. When that happens, we often shut down the office and leave maybe an hour early to avoid the storm, especially if we are not very busy. This summer if you need to get in touch with us, it will be better if you do so well before 4PM Eastern Daylight time. The worst thunderstorms always come on Friday afternoons, and they roll in even earlier just before three day weekends.
